Control Panel Showdown: cPanel, DirectAdmin, and CyberPanel

Last reviewed

Summary: cPanel is the most widely supported and feature-complete panel but has the highest licence cost, priced per account. DirectAdmin is lighter and cheaper with a simpler interface. CyberPanel is free and open source, built around OpenLiteSpeed, and suits single-server WordPress hosting. Your choice should follow licence cost per site and the web server you want.

Memory overhead

We do not publish synthetic memory benchmarks, because results vary with installed services. As a rule, cPanel runs more background daemons (including its own services, mail and spam filtering), so it needs a larger server than DirectAdmin or CyberPanel. On a small VPS, check idle usage with free -m after installing each panel on a trial instance.

Ease of administration

  • cPanel: very polished end-user interface; WHM for server-level tasks; extensive automation APIs.
  • DirectAdmin: compact interface with a three-level admin/reseller/user model; quick to learn.
  • CyberPanel: modern interface with one-click WordPress, LiteSpeed Cache integration and built-in backups.

Do you need a panel at all?

For a single application managed by a developer, a panel adds attack surface and cost. A hand-built LEMP stack plus our hardening checklist may serve you better. Panels earn their keep when non-technical users need to manage email, databases and files. Pick a server in VPS hosting for developers or return to server infrastructure.
