Web Hosting Bandwidth and Disk Storage Estimation Tool

Last reviewed

Summary: Enter your average page weight, daily pageviews, media library size and expected traffic spike to estimate monthly data transfer and the disk space your hosting plan needs. The formula is shown below so you can check the numbers yourself.

How the calculation works

Formulastext
Monthly bandwidth (GB) = page size (MB) × daily pageviews × 30.4 × (1 + spike %) ÷ 1,024
Storage (GB) = (site files + media library + database) × (1 + backups kept on server) × 1.2 headroom

30.4 is the average number of days in a month. The spike factor adds headroom for launches, newsletters or seasonal peaks. The 20% storage headroom covers logs, caches and temporary files.

Finding your real page size

  1. Open your page in Chrome or Firefox and press F12 to open developer tools.
  2. Choose the Network tab and tick 'Disable cache'.
  3. Reload. The status bar shows the total transferred size.
  4. Repeat for several key pages and average the results.

What to do with the result

Compare the estimate with plan limits, keeping at least 30% spare. 'Unmetered' plans still have fair-use limits, often on CPU or inodes rather than gigabytes. If you are near a shared plan's limits, read shared vs VPS vs dedicated; to reduce page weight, see web development and performance.
